Attorney-general Costas Clerides on Tuesday censured legal experts who were quick to rule that the restrictions on Cypriots returning from overseas were unconstitutional.
“Unfortunately, some people are trying to find legally tolerable solutions to save the country from a catastrophic pandemic, while others are theorising without careful study,” Clerides said.
Several legal experts had criticised the government’s decision to demand a medical certificate from Cypriots returning from abroad, arguing that it was a violation of Article 14 of the constitution which states that “no citizen shall be banished or excluded from the Republic under any circumstances.”
One of those experts, Achilleas Demetriades, said on Twitter that it was the inalienable right of every Cypriot to return to his homeland.
“Where else will they go?”
