Auditor-general Odysseas Michaelides will on Monday ask the attorney-general to investigate whether his phone calls are being monitored following a suspicious incident, CyBC reported on Sunday citing an article in Phileleftheros.

According to the article, on Saturday a CyBC journalist had called Michaelides, who was abroad, on his mobile phone for a statement on some topic. At some point he had to cut the call short and told her to call him back later.

When she did, he said what he heard was their previous conversation on playback.

Michaeldies later tweeted: “The secrecy of private telephone conversations should be a given. Events that indicate a possible violation are of concern.”

Phileleftheros reported him as saying he was taking the incident very seriously since the confidentiality of private communications was protected by the constitution and that it was a criminal offence to violate this right.

The newspaper said Michaelides had contacted the general manager of Cyta to which both he and the journalist subscribe, and was assured their calls were not being recorded by the company.

Asked by Phileleftheros whether he suspected anyone, he said it was not his job to investigate the incident.
